´´I need a date !....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´All That Heaven Will Allow´
´´Got any spring out here on Long Island yet ? (cheers) had a little
bit in New Jersey....when the weather gets nice, I like to take a walk in the
park, you know....see who´s hanging out.... hey, hey, man, yo ! how you
doing ? alright....hadn´t seen you in a little while, you know.... been
busy....what you been up to ?....yeah, got married, I know, yeah....what do
you got ? ....oh-oh, here come the baby pictures (chuckles)....there´s
a little Big Man out there now.... he´s what ? three, three years old,
yeah....he´s got his own car, his own little saxophone.... he´s
handsome too (chuckles) woah.....a lot of little babies running around now....in
about 15 years there´s gonna be a E Street Band volume two....a lot of
women gonna be in it, though, yeah (chuckles) man, I remember we used to, we
used to sit on this bench in 1975....me and Clarence, we used to bring down
like, we´d have some sandwiches and a couple of bottles of beer in a little
bag....and we used to pick this spot because right on the corner, there was
this big office building and right about 4.30 the girls used to start coming
out after work (chuckles) oh man, we used to sit here and they used to come
out right about this time, right, yeah ? wait, here they come, man....check,
uh, check this one, the one with the briefcase and the blue skirt coming this
way, coming, here she comes, check.....(chuckles) no, we can´t do that
(chuckles) man, I remember I was with you, I was with you the night that you
met your wife....Clarence come running in my hotelroom, said ´Bruce, Bruce,
I just, I just fell in love´ ....that´s not unusual, alright....he
says ´But you don´t understand I fell in love and I´m, I met
the girl I´m gonna marry´....now, that´s still not unusual
for Clarence, always meeting a girl he was gonna marry....and then you got married
! (chuckles) that was unusual (chuckles) oh, and I got married (chuckles)(?)(chuckles)
remember how it felt the first time somebody comes walking into that room and
you´re seeing ´em and....starting to feel good....back in New Jersey,
it feels kind of....kind of like this....come on, Ritchie, hit it, man ! (the
Horns start singing)....that´s the sweet part....then come the real part
(chuckles) you know, and now, man, I gotta be home for dinner, I gotta be home
like right at 6.30, you know....and I gotta be in bed by 11.30, you wouldn´t
believe, that´s when she goes to bed, alright, I´ll see you later,
I´ll see you, man....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Two Faces´
´´This is a song about waking up in the middle of the night and,
uh....finding a stranger in the house....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Seeds´
´´We were down in Texas on our last tour of the States here, seen
a lot of people from..... Pittsburg, Cleveland, Detroit, went down looking for
work in the oil fields....the price of oil dropped, they´d be down there
with their wives and their kids....no jobs, no money, no place to go....sleeping
in tents by the side of the road or sleeping in their cars at night....with
no place that they could call ´home´....this is called ´Seeds´....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Spare Parts´
´´So how you doing out there tonight ? (cheers)....how´re
you guys back there ? (cheers) in my rearview mirror....that´s good....right
before we come out on tour, every time....me and the band have this little ritual
that we go through....we always end up sitting down at dinner someplace and
I start pulling out all the old stories about the old days and stuff....I´ve
told ´em about a thousand times, everybody´s heard ´em about
a thousand times....but they don´t act like it, you know, they act like
it´s new (chuckles) even though it´s boring probably (chuckles)
and I guess there´s something in, in telling those old stories that, when
we´ve been apart for a long time, bring us closer together again....get
us ready to spend some time and come out and see you....but the past is a funny
thing because....while it binds us together, it´s also something that
can hold you back, keep you down, you get stuck with your old dreams ....that
don´t come true and the world just ends up breaking your heart over and
over again.... well, this next song is a song I wrote about a woman trying to
rid herself of the part of her past that is holding her back and holding her
down....she´s trying to understand the value of her own individual existence....and
the value of the life of her child....it seems no matter where we go or what
we become that the value of our own lives and our own time keeps slipping, slipping
away from us....well, this is a song about a woman struggling to put aside her
old dreams....and to find something new and beautiful and meaningful in her
life....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, after ´Born in the U.S.A´
´´Thanks.....we´re gonna take a short break and then we´re
gonna be back to sink Long Island, alright ?....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´You Can Look´
´´Oh yeah....here´s a song about that great American pastime....no,
not that one.....that´s the old one....this one´s about shopping....went
down to the mall one morning early so nobody´d hassle me....went to buy
like one of ´em little beatboxes, you know....walked in, started checking
´em out, a saleswoman come over and....´You gonna buy that thing
?´....and she looked at me and said ´Ain´t you that, uh, ain´t
you that rock and roll singer ?....are you gonna buy that thing ?´....she
says ´I like, I like, uh, I like your videos....that girl, tell me that
girl, you know the one, the one that you danced with, did you hire her or was
she really in the audience ?....are you gonna buy that thing ?´....I said
´Lady, I´m gonna smash this fucking thing in a minute´....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´I´m a Coward´
´´Let me regain my composure....is there anybody alive out there
? (cheers) is there anybody feel the living spirit out there tonight ? (cheers)....that´s
good because.....what I wanna know is....are there any mean, brave, Long Island
men out there tonight ? (cheers)....any macho men out there tonight? (cheers)....because
I´ve known men that would swim rivers....that would climb mountains....that
would wrestle with the beasts of the jungle....but there was one thing they
was afraid of....and I´m gonna tell you what that one thing was....that
one thing was L-U-V, I´m talking about love, love scared ´em....it
scared ´em to death, made ´em run home to their mommies....now,
are there any brave, courageous Long Island women out there tonight ? (cheers)....are
there any, are there any macho women out there tonight ? (cheers) because, girls,
I´m talking to you too....I´ve known women that would canoe down
the Amazon wrestling with alligators, crocodiles, crawling king snakes....but
there was one thing they was afraid of, they were afraid of love, love scared
´em....now I´m down here tonight....because I´ve got a confession
to make....and I am not ashamed, I am not ashamed to say that I have sinned
!....and I don´t need no Jim Swaggert or Jim Baker or Pat Robertson to
forgive me.....them boys can kiss my ass, baby.....and Jerry Falwell, he can
kiss ass twice, baby....because I´m not afraid of natural things but what
I´ve got to say is, what I´ve got to testify to is....that I´m
a coward....when it comes to love.....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Part Man Part Monkey´
´´Man, they had this, uh....TV-movie on last week, it was like with
Kirk Douglas and, uh.... another fellow, where they put the guy on trial for,
uh, teaching evolution, well, it went like this....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, end of ´Dancing in the Dark´
´´Well, have you been lonely ? (cheers) I mean so lonely....that
you just wanna lock yourself up in your room....in your house and never come
out ?....that´s when you gotta reach out.... somebody to remind you that
you´re a real human being.....that´s when I wanna say....that´s
when I wanna say....that´s when I wanna say....hey, pretty baby....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, middle of ´Light of Day´
´´Now, move over, Rover, let Brucie take over, baby....on the piano,
Professor Roy Bittan.... on the drums, the Mighty Max Weinberg....guitar and
vocals, Miss Patti Scialfa....on the guitar, the great Nils Lofgren.....bass
guitar, Mr. Garry W.Tallent....on the organ, Dan Federici....(?) Horns in the
back....and last but not least.....I ain´t gonna beat around the bush
....the greatest man in the history of Western civilization....and in this next
election....my vote for President goes for Clarence ´Big Man´ Clemons....don´t
vote for that fucking Bush, man, I´m telling you.....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Born to Run´
´´Thanks.....thank you....when, uh, I was sitting home....deciding
what we were gonna do, if we were gonna tour this year or not.....I was thinking
of what songs we might do, I know there was a lot of songs I didn´t wanna
do....right now and, uh....you know, you gotta go out and you gotta sing a new
song, that´s my job (chuckles) and uh....but this song, this is a song,
uh, oh, I guess I wrote about 15 years ago now.....I was 24, I was sitting on
the edge of my bed in Long Branch, New Jersey....and uh....I guess when I wrote
it, I was writing about a guy and girl who wanted to run and keep on running....but
as I got older, as I got older, I realised and I asked myself ´Well, where,
where were they going ?´ you know, what....and this song began to take
on more....I guess of a searching-like quality as I sang it through the years....and
uh....and I guess I realised that you can get out there, you can get away but
that your own individual freedom ends up feeling very meaningless unless it
is attached to people and friends and community and things that you love....and
I realised that the people I wrote about so long ago were really out there looking
for a place that they can call ´home´....and then I realised that
home wasn´t out there but that it was buried deep inside of here somewhere.....so
this is a song that´s kept me good company on my search, I hope it´s
kept you good company on your search.....I´d like to do it and, and dedicate
it to you tonight wishing you all the best of everything....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Love Me Tender´
´´Thank you, I´d like to thank everybody for coming down to
the show tonight, thanks....it´s nice to be on the East Coast.....this
is for you.....wishing you safe passage....through the tunnel of love.....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Rosalita´
´´And now for the greatest love song I ever wrote....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Detroit Medley´
´´It went to his head....that ain´t the end of the story....they
drove out of town, down the highway....they found a little bar, they ordered
a couple of beers, there was a little band on the bandstand and the band leader
said ´One, two, three, four´....
(....) Right about now is when I look out there....and I say...is these people´s
asses (?)....I begin to feel cruel and sadistic....in the name of love of course.....now
you probably think I´m tired about now....I think you´re tired....I
think you´ve had it....I think you´re finished.... you´re
just putting up a good front, that´s all....well, then I got a question
I wanna ask you..... Do you like good music ?....´´
01.04.88 Uniondale, NY, intro to ´Raise Your Hand´
´´Well, it ain´t even 12 o´clock yet....get back to
them, boys....what I wanna say is are you ready for some religious liberation
? (cheers) some spiritual affirmation ? (cheers) some sexual consummation ?
(cheers) then just raise your hand, come on....
(....) Before I go, there´s one last thing I´ve got to know....is
there something you want ? (cheers) is there something you need ? (cheers) is
there something you´ve got to have ? (cheers) then you gotta raise your
hand.....´´
