03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, intro to ‘The Big Muddy’:
‘‘Thank you....Thanks...Well....I think we’ve all, one time
or another, believed in absolute (?) that.....uh, there’s good, there’s
bad.....a right thing to do or a wrong thing to do.....and uh, you get a little
older and you start finding about, uh.....finding out about...all the spaces
in between those places....from experience, so.....”
03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, intro to ‘The River’:
”Thanks.....This is, uh....I wrote this song when there was really hard
times early 80’s....out there in the country, still hard times in the
90’s.....uh, people been pushed down and out really hard the past decade....(?)
the current administration....This is a song about just barely holdin’
on....”
03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, intro to ‘If I Should Fall Behind’ (after
‘Living Proof’)
”Thanks....I wrote that song awhile after my little boy was born.....(crowd
cheers) kids, they....they (?) a lot of hope all the time, just....hope of change
(chuckles)....gets you to rise above yourself in all your daily sort of .....cynicism....can’t
afford to be cynical when those little babies are runnin’around (chuckles)....you
can´t really afford despair, you can’t really afford ....hopelessness,
when you got these....kids runnin’ around , when you see (?) the future...’cause
they’re like your afterlife, you know .....the big shitty mess that you
make while you’re here, you gotta clean up (chuckles)...so...they get
you thinkin’about a lotta things , you know, it’s.....a scary world
to bring kids into, something everybody who lived through the....through the
Los Angeles riots, which everybody did, thanks to television....there’s
uh....it’s a scary time when you realise that....that you’re only
this far away from a country where, uh....on any given day, doesn’t matter
what you feel in your heart, doesn’t matter where you stand....doesn’t
matter what you believe in, doesn’t matter who you are, all that matters
is what you look like , as to whether you’re gonna live or die (crowd
yells)....that’s a scary thought....a lot of people live with that every
day , you know.....so, I guess, uh.....it’s voting time (chuckles)....are
you registered out there ? (crowd yells)....haven’t voted, voted in a
long time, I’m gonna vote this year....and uh, I think it’s important
to have an administration ....I’m a little old, too old to believe too
much in politicians or in rock stars to (?) (laughs) ...but uh, I think it’s
important to have an administration that’s at least interested ....in
all the people... so...anyway, uh, this is a song about, uh, how hard it is
to come together....”
03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, intro to ‘Leap of Faith’:
” Yeah, this is the part of the show now where I gotta....I have to stop
because we have a sponsor now, you know....I got a sponsor tonight, like everybody’s
got sponsors these days (some people boo) ....I got a sponsor....(more boos)...Yeah,
you stop sellin’all those records, you gotta make up that money somehow,
you see (chuckles)....But, wait, wait, I’m not gonna try and sell you
no , like athletic sneakers....I’m not gonna try and sell you no, uh....beer
or perfume or anything like that....uh....’cause our sponsor tonight is....is
LOVE, that’s right, ladies and gentlemen! (crowd cheers)....We’re
sponsored by love here tonight !...Has anybody ever been in love out there ?
(crowd cheers)....Come on, that’s....I know, gimme....that’s all
the people that ever been in love out there ? (crowd cheers louder)....Gimme
a little faith (chuckles)...now, who’s been in love and had like their
pride stripped away, been stabbed throught the heart, had....had their....been
humiliated, been (?) (crowd yells)...oh, yeah....oh, yeah....you keep comin’back,
you see.....that takes, uh....faith....(chuckles)...where there’s faith,
there’s hope and where there’s hope, there’s .....SEX! (crowd
cheers)...That’s how it all works out (giggles)...so, anyway....this next
song is kinda ‘bout love, faith, hope, sex, divorce, adultery, all the
things that make life a big fucking mess and it’s a diary of my own personal
sexual habits ! (crowd cheers)....in only thinly veiled imagery , so....Let’s
(?)....”
03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, intro to ‘Working on the Highway’:
(someone throws Bruce a vest with the image of Elvis on the back) ”Hell,
it’s Saturday night....bonus track, bonus track !.....(crowd cheers)...I
think the Elvis vest will be appropriate for this one....”
03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, intro to ‘Thunder Road’:
”Thanks a lot....Thanks....I wanna say it’s great to be back in
Phoenix (crowd cheers)...(?) coming here, uh....the first time I came here was
like 1974...75....I was nine years old (chuckles)...(?)...but uh....we had so
many great shows over at that Celebrity Theatre, you know (crowd cheers).....this
was, uh.....this was uh, this was one of the first towns that really gave us,
uh....gave us a lotta support....at the start (crowd cheers)....always got a
good crowd when you came here, you know....yeah.... so, uh....just wanna do
this for all my....old fans out there (crowd cheers)....to show that I appreciate
you hanging out with me (chuckles....)
03.10.92 Phoenix, AZ, middle of ´Light of Day´
´´I drove 3,000 miles all the way from the great state of New Jersey
just to be here tonight..... came via Sweden, via France, via Italy, via Rome,
via London, England, via the great city of Chicago, went down to Dallas, Texas,
up through the Southwest, out to San Francisco, spent a whole shitload of money
on a real fancy house in Los Angeles, down to San Diego, to here tonight, to
Phoenix, Arizona.....I´m here tonight because I have one thing on my mind,
I have one thing that I´ve got to know....I know you´re downhearted....I
know you´re disillusioned ....I know, I know there´s 57 fucking
channels and nothing on....but I´m here tonight because there´s
just one thing I´ve got to know....and what I wanna know is....what I
wanna know is ....what I´ve got to know is, what I´ve got to know
is.....is there anybody alive out there ? (cheers).....´´
