06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´Silver Palomino´´
´´Oh yes....ah, some light, yes....(speaks Italian)....I had some
neighbors that, uh.... two young boys lost their mama and uh....I wrote this
for them, this is ´Silver Palomino´....´´
06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´Incident on 57th Street´´
´´Grazie, when I was, uh, young, I didn´t write any love songs
so I, uh, hid my love songs in other songs, my father told me that love songs
were government propaganda (chuckles) and they were meant to just get you married
and have children and pay taxes and, uh, so, uh, but my mother was very romantic,
she, uh, had all the, uh, novels with the men that looked like Fabio on the,
uh (chuckles) was Fabio popular here? (no response from the crowd) sort of (?)(chuckles)
but he had, uh, anyway, so I do this tonight for, uh....for my ma, for mamma....´´
06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´Real World´´
´´Thank you, my friends....alright, yes, oh, grazie, ooh (chuckles)
alright, I got....a song from ´92, we didn´t get it on the record
but I´ll get it now, I met some folks by the fountain, this is for the
little girl, alright....´´
16.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´Jesus Was an Only Son´´
´´Thank you...ah, ok (introduces the song in Italian) yes, ain´t
that the truth? (chuckles)(continues in Italian)....this is ´´Jesus
Was an Only Son´´....
(....) at his mother´s feet....now, the first thing that strikes you....when
you become a parent is how....there is nothing....you wouldn´t do to keep
your....child safe....it´s a sudden and shocking feeling....that you know
will be with you the rest of your life, if you´re lucky....Mother prays....
(....) shall pierce your dreams this night....now, if you believe that what
gives our choices weight and meaning are the things that we sacrifice for them,
the things that we give up....I always figured Jesus had to be thinking that
Galilee is very beautiful this time of year....and that there was probably a
little bar down there....and that Mary Magdalene could tend bar....and he could
save the preaching for the weekends....and he could have some kids...and get
to watch the sun fall on their faces....and get to see the next day....and the
next day...and the next day... and the next day...and the next day....in the
garden....´´
06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´Leah´´
´´We all....we carry with us the seeds of our destruction....a great
joke played on us by God....comes with free will or semi-free will....we also
carry with us the seeds to bring good things into the world....so, uh, this
is a song about a man who...figures, finally figures out how to come down on
the....just the right side of that equation, this is called ´Leah´....´´
06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´The Hitter´´
´´Thank you....ok.....this, uh....is a song about the other side
of that equation, I guess, the seeds of our destruction....this is a song about
a young man who gets in trouble, leaves home....uh, flees to New Orleans, becomes
a champion but sells himself short....and uh...I grew up in a house that was
both touched by fortune and touched by the harsh hand of fate....and uh, the
only thing I learnt is they don´t cancel each other out, they, you learn
to live with them both, this is ´The Hitter´....´´
06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´Matamoros Banks´´
´´Lentomente, lentomente (chuckles)....(?)....alright....yes, this
was the quietest rushing of the stage I´ve ever seen (chuckles)(?)....I
need, uh...alright, this is a song, uh (?)....that´s alright, this is
a song I wrote as a sequel to ´Across the Border,´every year....hundreds
of people die trying to get into the United States, they die in the mountains
and they die in the rivers and in our deserts and they die in the backs of vans....so,
uh, this is a song for them, this is called ´Matamoros Banks´....yes....this
song is, uh, written backwards from the body at the bottom of the river to the
walk across the desert to the man standing on the banks of the Matamoros, which
is the town across from Brownsville, Texas....´´
06.06.05 Rome, Italy, intro to ´´The Promised Land´´
´´Thank you, I wanna thank everybody for coming to the show, thank
you for coming to the show tonight....and uh....you know, I go away and, uh....you
come back and you forget how beautiful Rome is, it takes your breath away when
you ride in at night and uh....it´s a beautiful city, in the middle of
the night the buildings, they speak (chuckles) they all speak....and, uh, it´s
a very inspirational, a very inspirational city to be in and, uh....I thank
you, thank you for hosting me and I....this is for you, ´Promised Land´....´´
