09.05.74 Cambridge, MA, intro to ‘Spirit in the Night’:
”Riding in my car today.....downtown....and I heard this song on the radio
and I never heard it on the radio before (?)....”
09.05.74 Cambridge, MA, intro to ‘ I Sold My Heart to the Junkman’:
”This is a song, this is a very sad song this next song we’re gonna
do....this song is so sad that sometimes I have to leave the stage and.....go
cry in the backstage a little bit while I’m singing this song....the reason
this song is so sad is because this story happened to me just a little while
ago....ain’t it true ? (Clarence: ‘True’) (chuckles).... now
it was, it was a thing where I met this, this beautiful girl, was she a beautiful
girl ?....she was, she was nice....and, and....I gave up my whole heart....every
, every bit...and she gave it back to me a month later....all beat up so bad
and so terrible looking.....that I sold my heart ..... the junkman.....now I
can never fall in love again .....”
09.05.74 Cambridge, MA, intro to ‘Kitty’s Back’:
”We come up last night, we stopped at this gas-station....and you know
it’s, it’s, it’s.....boring working in a gas-station, I lived
next to....one for 18 years (chuckles) .....and this cat last night....filled
up our car with diesel fuel....filled that baby up to the brim.....it was diesel
fuel and now.....we had to sit around while they tried to get it out ....easy
to put in, easy to get it out....this cat stuck in all the pipes, you know and
uh .....(?)...then we got up here and we looked....we were staying at this place
called.... The Amber Inn, right....now that’s out on....Route 2 ?....Three....Two
?....One ? (chuckles)....and....I went in this joint last night, right and this
guy gives me the keys, we couldn’t find the place, we drove all around....for....an
hour....I drove, we drove for an hour and we went to somebody else’s house.....(?)....these
are slick cats (?).... but ...so uh....we being part of the dumb guys last night,
we stopped at this Amber Inn and I went in to my room.....now I swear to God.....
I’ve stayed in some pretty places but this joint had ‘em all beat,
it had like.....looked like blood on that thing that they put over....the sheets
so you can’t tell how dirty the sheets are (chuckles)....this place is
messed up, there’s mud on the floor....and there’s blood on the
sheets and it looks ....like somebody just had a whole thing going on there
before I came in.....and this cat, the bass player, right....the bass player’s
got a room across the hall and I go over to the place.....and he’s got
(?) carpet on (cheers)(chuckles).....he’s got a big kingsize bed, he’s
got wall mirrors and sinks with the.....and the biggest room I ever seen in
a place like that, living like a king.....so....it’s like everybody thinks,
everybody tries to get the key first, thinking he who gets the key first, gets
the nicest room......this cat laid back and waited and he got the last key.....Hell
of an interesting story ? (cheers) ....”
