13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´All That Heaven Will Allow´
´´So is it spring in Indianapolis yet or what ?....seems like it
today out there....it was nice.... (?) take my jacket off....(?) you get that
back East, uh....everyone starts coming out, they leave their winter clothes
home.....people sitting on the corner drinking some cans of beer from a brown
paper bag....(?)...you get days like this, I like to take a walk in the park....see
if any of my old friends are still around....hey, Big Man, how you doing ? alright,
good to see you, yeah....how´ve you been ?....yeah, haven´t seen
you in a while....what you been doing ? ....(?)(chuckles) what do you got ?
oh, been busy, we´ve got baby pictures of the little Big Man here....he
looks good (chuckles) he looks great....he´s almost as handsome as his
dad .... there´s a lot of little babies around now....pretty soon gonna
be a....in about 15 years you´re gonna have E Street Band Volume Two....man,
I remember I was with you the night you met your wife....we were overseas and
Clarence, everytime he met a girl, he would always come knocking at my door,
you know, late at night....when he´d come back and I was like his Dr.Ruth
or something....´Do it, do it, go ahead´ (chuckles)....but this
one night he meets this girl, we´re at this party and she comes walking
in and she´s pretty and Clarence goes running into the bathroom making
sure he´s looking good and he would have this patchuli oil that he used
to splash all over himself (chuckles) and then he´d come out and like
I was listening, I was kind of standing at the bar listening and he had on what
I call his ´love-face´....that means he was being a whole lot nicer
than he really is, you see (chuckles)....he was cool and suave, you know, (?)
worked too (chuckles) oh, Jesus, that was something.....remember what it´s
like when the girl first come walking in the room and she´s looking so
good and you want her to be interested in you.....well, back in New Jersey,
it feels kind of like this....come on, guys, come on. Ritchie....oh yeah.....that
love thing, you know, man.....bet you go home early these days....what about
tonight ? what do you think ? remember we used to stay out till 4 a.m ? used
to go to all those clubs and things ? man, let´s do it ! tonight ? alright,
we´ll do it tonight !....(?) see you later....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´Spare Parts´
´´How you doing out there tonight ? (cheers)....how´s everybody
in the backseat ? (cheers) ....there was this, uh....fella and this girl, they
met in a little kind of shot-and-beer bar down along the coast....on the weekend,
he was a house painter....he was kind of young and a little on the reckless
side....and she was, uh, she was a little older....and uh, she was looking for
somebody to love her and he was a lot of fun, he was kind of real, real sweet-tempered....
and real gentle and telling jokes all the time....and so they got together and
they moved in.... a little garage apartment about two blocks in from the beach
in the wintertime.....you know, it had two or three rooms and....a little porch
(?)....and things went real good, they fell in love and she got pregnant and
he, uh, saved his money for the first time and went down and bought her a ring
and she picked out a dress.....and then, uh, something happened, I don´t
know exactly what, maybe he got scared, maybe he was a little too young, but
he took off on her....but she never really let him go, she kept him in her mind
and she kept him in her heart every day and every night.....(?) it was a memory
that the world could take and break her heart with over and over again every
single day because there comes a time when you gotta take the past, no matter
how much you love it, and you gotta put it away....so this song, this is about
a woman, a woman struggling to understand the value of her own independent existence....and
the value of the life of her child....trying to put down that past, those old
dreams and find something new and beautiful and meaningful in her life now.....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´You Can Look´
´´This is a song dedicated to that great American pastime....not
that one.....talking about shopping....you get that Home Shopping Network out
here ?....(?) you know where the woman comes on and she´s got that damn
little horn that she beeps when somebody buys something ?....and you send in
for something that was, uh, 69.95 down to 39.95 down to 19.95 (?) in the next
60 seconds you´re gonna get a free set of steak knives....to stab your
hubby with....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ‘I’m a Coward’
”Let me regain my composure....my hair alright ?....is there anybody alive
out there tonight ? (cheers)....is there anybody with that living, breathing
spirit in them out there tonight ? (cheers)...that’s good....because what
I want to know is....do we have any rough, any tough, Indianapolis men out there
tonight ? (cheers)...let me see you, boys....because I’ve known men that
would swim rivers....they’d climb mountains.....they’d wrestle with
the beasts of the jungle....but there was something that they was afraid of....now
I tell you what that was .... what they was afraid of was L....U....V, I’m
talking about love......am I talking about you ? ...(?) I´m talking about
you....they get next to love and they start running home to their mommies....now,
do we have any brave, courageous, heroic Indianapolis women out there tonight
? (cheers)....let me see you, girls, come on....do we have any sweet, liberated,
sexy Indianapolis women out there ? (cheers)....because, girls, I’m talking
to you too...that’s right...that´s right, I’m talking to you
too, I’ve known women....women that would jump out of airplanes at 30,000
feet, when they get next to love, when love gets in their hearts....they run
away....they run away....now, I’m not down here trying to point some fingers....I’ve
got a confession of my own that I’ve got to make.....and what I wanna
tell you good people tonight .....is that I have sinned !....and I ain´t
ashamed, baby....and I don´t need no Jimmy Swaggert, no Jim Baker, no
Pat Robertson to forgive me....them boys can kiss my ass, baby....and that Jerry
Falwell, he can kiss my ass twice, both cheeks...´cause I ain´t
afraid of man made things, I’m a brave man.....but what I´ve got
to confess is....that I’m a coward when it comes to love.....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´Part Man Part Monkey´
´´Now...there´s those that believe we descended from....Adam
and Eve....and then there´s those that....that believe, uh....well, let
me tell you this story....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ‘Born to Run’
”Thank you....this is a song that I wrote about 15 years ago....when I
was 5 years old.... wrote it on, uh, wrote it in New Jersey...on the bed, wrote
it one afternoon...and I guess when I play it now, it kind of surprises me about
how much I knew about my life then....the questions that I asked myself in this
song....are the things that I´ve been chasing after the answers for ever
since....when I wrote it, I guess, I thought I was writing about a guy and a
girl that wanted to run and keep on running....sounds like a nice romantic idea....but,
uh, doesn´t seem to work out....as I got older I realised I´d put
all those people in all those cars, myself included, I was gonna have to find
some place to go....and as I sang this song through the years....I realised
that that guy and that girl that I put in that car 15 years ago were out looking
for...for some sort of connection, for some sort of connection with a bigger
world, with some community someplace, with some friends, with some....(?) some
connection to find that love that´s just buried in everybody´s hearts....and
uh, I guess that´s why I´m, you know, I still come out to your town
(chuckles)....that´s what (?) money´s not bad either but (chuckles)
but the other stuff is pretty nice (chuckles)....anyway, I´d like to,
I´d like to do this for you tonight, this song´s kept me good company
on my search for all those years, I hope it’s kept you good company on
yours....let me dedicate it to you tonight, wishing you all love and happiness....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ‘Rosalita’
´´Before we, uh, before we continue with the show, the management
has asked me to make an emergency announcement....is everybody in the room tonight
fully insured against heart attacks ? (cheers)....against extreme excitement
? (cheers)....just don´t be sueing me, baby !
....are you sure ? (cheers)...are you insured ? (cheers)....´cause you´re
asking for it....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´Have Love Will Travel´
´´We are from New Jersey....and you don´t come all the way
the fuck out here to stop now.... get back on these legs, man, come on, hit
me.....ladies and gentlemen, we are here tonight, we are here tonight, we drove
thousands of miles....just to see your funny-looking faces out there, baby....and
we didn´t come in no fancy rock star airplane either....we have three
station-wagons, we drove for 15 hours through the, through the, uh.....alright,
we did come in one of them fancy rock star airplanes.....but we thought about
driving.....what I wanna know tonight, I´m here a man with a mission in
mind, is there anybody out there that needs a little love tonight ? (cheers)....is
there anybody out there that needs a little affection ? (cheers).... that needs
a little respect ? (cheers)....that needs a little personalized attention ?
(cheers).... ´cause my motto is ´Have Love Will Travel´....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´Sweet Soul Music´
´´I´ve got a question that I wanna ask you.....are you tired
yet ?....don´t you wanna go home and watch ´em ´Kojak´-re-runs
?....ain´t you gotta go to work tomorrow ? ....ain´t you gotta go
to school tomorrow ?...ain´t you gotta go home and, uh, be nice to your
wives and your hubbies ?....then there´s something I wanna know....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, intro to ´Twist and Shout´
´´This is getting ridicilous now....oh, one last time, one for the
road....”
13.05.88 Indianapolis, IN, end of ´Dancing in the Dark´
´´Sometimes I get....I get feeling so lonely....and I can´t
see no sunshine.....all I see.....all I see is rain.....come on and hide these
tears in my eyes....that´s when I know I´ve got to reach out to
somebody....because I need a little help....somebody help me dance my blues
away ....´´
