15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Johnny 99´
´´Alright, can you feel the heat out there ? (cheers)....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Seeds´
´´Here´s a song, we....traveled down through Texas....on the
first part of our American tour ....there´s a lot of folks down there
from up north, from Detroit....(?) who came down to find work in the oil fields,
on the oil rigs....(?) down there with their families, when they got down there,
the price of oil dropped, they started shutting ´em down, they ended up
down there with nothing to do, no place to go, no jobs....no place to sleep....they´d
be out on the highway at night sleeping in their cars....this is called ´Seeds´....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´The River´
´´Thanks....gonna do, uh....this next song for my brother-in-law
and my sister, they´re here tonight with their kids....(?) they got married
and they had kids when they were really nothing but kids themselves and....and
they´re good kids....so....Mike and Chrissie, (?) a good job to Mom and
Pop, this is for them....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Glory Days´
´´Are you sweatting yet ? (cheers)(?) man, this is a song for anybody
over 30 out there tonight (cheers)(?) you got your kids with you....this is
a song for you....´cause in the end.... it ain´t nothing but glory
days....but it´s always hard when they pass....are you ready, band ? ....are
you ready, people ? (cheers)....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´The Promised Land´
´´No matter how old you get....you gotta keep searching for that
Promised Land....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´My Hometown´
´´Thanks....oh, this is, uh....this is a song that....I guess I
wrote it thinking about the town I grew up in (?)....when I was a kid, I always
hated it, you know, I hated it, used to think I couldn´t wait till I´d
get out of there, that I´d never miss it....I didn´t understand
why people stayed, what was there for ´em....and when I got out on the
road, for a long time I never did miss it (?)....I guess when I was young, one
of the things I remember I was always afraid of was belonging to something because
if you admit that you belong to something, that means you´ve got some
responsobility to that place....(?) you´re a Philadelphian, that means
you´ve got some responsobility to Philadelphia....or if you´re an
American or a New Jerseyan or wherever you are....but tonight there´s
some people in the audience that are trying to live up to their responsobility
to their community, there´s some folks from the Greater Philadelphia Foodbank....and
what that is that each year in the States 20 percent of all the food that gets
produced gets wasted or thrown away, meanwhile in every city and in every town
we got kids going to bed at night hungry, we got old folks whose social security
checks don´t get ´em through the month, we got people that´d
been hit hard by unemployment, we got kids going to school without breakfast,
going to sleep without the right nutrition or kinds of food, and what a foodbank
does is it gets that food and gets it to the agencies that serve the people
....(?) folks from the Community Food Distribution Program, what they have is
they have (?) and kitchens all around this city (?) there´s some folks
from the Committee for Dignity and Fairness for the Homeless and that´s
an organization for homeless people who are trying to help other homeless people
to become active members of society....now, the reason I´m bringing all
this up is, is really pretty simple: because these are the folks that are out
there every day in your community making the ideas and the things that I´m
singing about tonight a reality in people´s lives....and without, without
them, without your support of them, all I´m doing is singing a bunch of
words up here....so when you go out there into the lobby tonight you´ll
see some phonenumbers for these organizations, if you could find your way to
support them in some small way, they´d appreciate it and I´d appreciate
it, after all they´re trying to make Philadelphia a better and a more
decent place for all its citizens....and this is your hometown so (?)....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´I´m on Fire´
´´I can remember growing up....my Dad just being so angry all the
time....sitting around thinking about everything that we didn´t have....watching
my Mother go down to the finance office borrowing for Christmas, paying it back,
borrowing money for Easter, paying it back, borrowing money for school clothes,
paying it back.....(?)....he´d sit there at night, not saying nothing....until
he´d get me thinking like that too....I´d lay up in bed....I remember
thinking if something, if something didn´t happen....I felt like I was
just gonna....someday I´d just....felt like I was just gonna....someday
I was just gonna.....just gonna.....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Pink Cadillac´
´´Well, now, this is a song about temptation....it´s about
conflict....between worldly things and spiritual health....between desires of
the flesh, and I´m talking about sexual desire.....and spiritual ecstasy....now,
where did all this conflict begin ?....it began way back when, in the beginning,
in a place called the Garden of Eden....now, the Garden of Eden was originally
believed to have been located in Mesopotamia....but the latest theological studies
have found out that its actual location was ten miles south of Jersey City,
off the New Jersey Turnpike.... and that, ladies and gentlemen, brothers and
sisters, is why they call it the Garden State !.... well, now, understand....in
the Garden of Eden there were none of the accoutrements of modern living....wasn´t
no radio, no tv, no refridgerators....you couldn´t go downtown and buy
one of them cheesesteaks if you wanted one....no Sir !....man, in the Garden
of Eden there was no sin....there was no sex....Man lived in a state of innocence....now,
when it comes to no sex, I prefer the state of guilt that I live in....but now
listen, man, in the Garden of Eden there were many wonderous things : man, there
was a lot of fruit trees....yeah, they had pears, they had, uh, bananas, they
had peaches, plums, they had everything....and God came down and said ´Now
listen: you can eat from all them other trees but just don´t mess with
this one....if you mess with this one, all hell´s gonna break loose !´....but,
now, people being what they are, they always want what they can´t have....that´s
terrible....(?) were known as Adam and Eve....and Eve, ooh, she looked so fine....man,
and when Adam kissed her, it was the first time that a man had ever kissed a
woman....and she had legs that were long and soft to the touch....and when Adam
touched her, it was the first time that a man had ever touched a woman....everybody
remembers that first time, right ?....and then Adam crawled up real close to
her and said ´Oh, Eve, I love you, baby´....and they went walked
down to the green fields....and they lay down....and when Adam....let´s
just say it was the first time....but, man, there was something else in the
Garden of Eden on that day, old Satan came slithering up on his belly and somehow
he turned their sweet love into a betrayal and sent them running down into the
darkness below....but that´s alright because right here tonight on this
backlot for 9995 and no money down, don´t worry if you´ve got bad
credit, it´s good here, we´ll finance, we´ll take a chance
on you, if you´ve got the nerve to ride, we´ve got the keys to the
first pink Cadillac....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´This Land Is Your Land´
´´Thank you, thanks a lot....I´d like to say....thank everybody
for coming down to these shows that we did here in Philly....and, uh....I wanna
thank particularly all you old fans out there....(?)...I´d like to do
this song for youse....this is, uh, I guess about the greatest song ever written
about America....it´s by Woody Guthrie....I guess what´s so good
about it is it gets right to the promise....that´s supposed to be in the
heart of our country....and as we sit here tonight, it´s a promise that´s
eroding for many of our fellow Americans....so the title of this song is really
a question, I guess it´s up to each of us in some small way try to make
it (?) every day so before I go I´d like to just remind you of those,
those organizations I mentioned before, you should check ´em out here
in your hometown (?) they´re, uh, they´re trying to make it real....make
this a better, a better city and a better country (?) for all, for all you guys....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Ramrod´
´´....on the saxophone, the greatest man in the history of Western
civilization, Big Man Clarence Clemons....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, middle of ´Twist and Shout - Do You Love Me?´
´´How you feeling, Big Man ?....how´s the band doing ?....alright....how´s
everybody up there in the stands over there ? (cheers) how are you guys up over
here ? (cheers) you alright ? (cheers)(?) you guys way in the back on the hill
? (cheers) are you ok back there ? (cheers) you getting enough oxygen ? (cheers)
alright (chuckles) now how about all the folks in the bleacher seats ? (cheers)
now how about everybody down on the dancefloor ? (cheers) good ....because before
I go....there´s one thing I gotta know....before I leave....there´s
one question I need an answer to....I came all the way to Philly....to find
out the answer to this question....now what I´ve got to know is (crowd:
´What ?´) I mean what I need to know is (crowd: ´What ?´)
you see, what I have to know is (crowd: ´What ?´) I mean what I´ve
got to know is (crowd: ´What ?´) what I can´t leave without
knowing is (crowd: ´What ?´) I mean what I´ve got to know
is (crowd: ´What ?´) what I need to know is (crowd: ´What
?´) Do you love me ?....´´
15.08.85 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Sherry Darling´
´´We got one more (?) for the road....here´s wishing you a
happy summer, this is a summer song....´´
