18.03.99 Asbury Park, NJ, middle of ´Light of Day´
´´Uh, what was I thinking of ? let me think a minute....oh yeah....I´m
so glad to be here in your city tonight....I´m glad to be here in Asbury
Park.....but I´m not here on a casual visit tonight....I´m not here
for a vacation....we´re here tonight with a purpose.....it´s been
a long journey....and there has been darkness but there has been light....there´s
been struggle but there´s been joy....there´s been hardship but
there´s been fortuity....and I (chuckles) I drove 100 miles, 200 miles,
300 miles, 400 miles, 500 miles, 600 miles....I´ve been 700 miles, 800
miles, 900 miles, 1000 miles, 2000 miles....and 3000 miles, 4000 miles, 5000
miles, 6000 miles, that´s right, I´ve been all around the world
many times....and what I wanted to say is (goes through the towns he´s
been) the great state of New Jersey....and what I wanna say is I know you might
be feeling a little downhearted.....if you´ve been feeling a little dispossessed,
if you´ve been feeling a little discombubolated, if you´ve been
feeling analyzed, downsized, stigmatized, retropsychedelicized, what I wanna
say is I....I....I....I.....I....I....can feel your pain....oh, what the hell
was I gonna say ?....oh, that´s what I was heading for....you might be
feeling a little downhearted, might be feeling like mortality is raising its
ugly head at this point in your life, you remember that the Good Book said ´Louie,
Louie, oh-oh, we´ve all got to go´, I want to tell you don´t
despair, I´m here tonight, Brothers and Sisters, and I want to tell you
that I cannot promise you everlasting life but I can promise you life....right
now !... and all you got to do is say ´I´....”
18.03.99 Asbury Park, NJ, intro to ´If I Should Fall Behind´
‘‘I wanna thank you for being a part of our rehearsal here.... we
got most of it right, we didn’t get all of it right.....still figuring
out where everything goes and all that stuff....but uh....really exciting for
me to be able to come here, I saw so many....oh, let me see, I was about, I
was 15....it was The Who, the Blues Magoos, they had electric suits, and Herman’s
Hermits....and I sat right about there....and uh....man, that was a big night,
nobody knew who The Who were and they busted up all the instruments....and I
was going ‘Was that real ?.... damn, can we go backstage and salvage some
of that shit ?’....oh ....and I sat up there and saw The Doors, right,
right where the light, where the red (?) is, you know....so it’s a, I’ve
never played here, never played here and uh.....nice to be able to play here
tonight, this is a ...this is a....special ....special night for us because
it’s a .... it’s kind of a....re....dedication, it is, it’s
a re-dedication of our band and the job ....and the.... and the job, the job
that we do.... and our commitment to serve...so it’s....it´s a big,
big night, it’s a big, big night and uh.... don’t know what to say
except, uh....I’m real happy..."
18.03.99 Asbury Park, NJ, intro to ´Land of Hope and Dreams´
´´Thank you....well, we got one more thing, we´re gonna leave
you with something new ´cause it´s a night of rebirth (chuckles)
and uh, this is called ´Land of Hope and Dreams´ and just tell everybody
that we´ll be seeing ´em and uh....we love you and this summer there´s
a big train coming down the track....”
