21.04.00 Charlotte, NC, middle of ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze Out’
(sings ‘It’s Alright’ and ‘Take Me to the River’)
That’s right now.....that’s where I wanna go tonight....I wanna
go to the riverside....I wanna find that river of life....I wanna seek out that
river of love and that river of faith.…and that river of hope....I wanna
find that river of transformation where you can go and you can be changed.....I
wanna find that river of resurrection where everybody gets a second chance......I
wanna find that river of sexual healing…and companionship…that river
of happiness, of joyousness….that’s where I wanna go tonight and
I want you to go with me.... that´s why I’m here….because
I can’t get there by myself....that’s why we’re here .....because
you can’t get there by yourself….tonight I wanna throw a rock’n’roll
exorcism….come on out, devil, I’m ready to rumble….a rock’n’roll
baptism….and you can bless me in those waters, those waters of joy and
happiness….but I stood once….I stood one evening as a young man
in front of a dark grove of trees….I was frightened just like a little
child to pass through those trees….even though I knew that on the other
side the river of life was waiting along with cold beer at a reasonable price…..but
I was paralysed….and then a gypsy woman called me forward, she was sitting
amongst the trees and she said ‘Son, what you need, what you need to get
through these woods is you need some help….what’s your line ? what,
what, tell me, tell me what’s your line ? your line ?….what you
need then is you need a band’.... that’s why I’m glad to introduce
tonight, with me at the riverside, the dean of the university of musical perversity,
the Secretary of intelligence, Professor Roy Bittan ....with me at the riverside,
the foundation of the E Street nation, Southern man, on the bass guitar, Mr.Garry
W.Tallent….with me at the riverside, the Minister of faith and friendship,
keeper of all that is righteous on E Street and star of the ‘Sopranos’-television
show, Little Steven on the guitar….stand with me, Brother, at the riverside
…..and now the man that brings the power night after night, the Minister
of the mighty beat, star of Late Night Television, the Mighty Max Weinberg....with
me at the riverside, the Secretary of heart and spirit, the Godfather of the
guitar, the great Nils Lofgren....now, the Minister of mystery, keeper of all
things unfathomable on E Street, on the Hammond B-3 organ and accordion, Brother
Dan Federici....oh, I gotta send this one out to my baby (blows a kiss) at home,
I miss you, honey….last but not least….last but not least….the
sky opens and the earth, it began to rumble, I’m talking about the Minister
of soul, Secretary of the brotherhood, and if we lived in a righteous nation,
the next president of the United States….do I have to say his name ? ....do
I have to say his name ?… say who ?….say who ?…say who ?….say
who ? …say who ?…say who ?…say who ?…say who ?…”
21.04.00 Charlotte, NC, intro to ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad’
‘‘Gonna do this tonight for the folks from the Second Harvest Foodbank
of Metrolina that are here with us….they´ll be out in the hall tonight….they
(?) distribute food to grass roots agencies here in North Carolina….and
uh, they serve North Carolina’s struggling citizens…there´s
many, many, many people that the economy is not reaching and Second Harvest
Foodbank of Metrolina provides ‘em with support and sustenance meeting
their daily needs so no child needs to go to bed hungry at night… they
deserve your time and your support, this is for the folks from the Second Harvest
Foodbank of Metrolina….”
21.04.00 Charlotte, NC, intro to ‘Dead Man Walkin’’
‘‘Thank you….little light….yeah….uh….we
also got some folks with us tonight out in the hall from the People of Faith
Against the Death Penalty….they´ll be out in the hall tonight, they’ll
be collecting signatures on a petition on a moratorium on the death penalty
and whatever, whatever your feelings are on this issue, they´ll be out
there to provide information for you on the death penalty or to give you the
opportunity to add your name to the petition for a moratorium on the death penalty
and to let your voice be heard….that´s the People of Faith Against
the Death Penalty ….”

´´Charlotte!….Charlotte!….but everywhere I´ve
gone, I´ve seen people lost in confusion....I´ve seen people lost
in the wilderness.…I´ve seen people lost in bitterness….I´ve
seen people lost in loneliness but tonight we’re here, we’ve come
thousands of miles on a search-and-rescue mission, we’re coming to get
you, if you´ve been downhearted, disspirited, disgusted, dispossessed,
analysed, downsized, stigmatised, fractionalised, factionalised, retro-psychedelized,
Republicanised….I´m here tonight, I´m here tonight, I wanna
re-educate you, resuscitate you, regenerate you, reconfiscate you, recombobulate
you, reindoctrinate you, resexualate you, rededicate you, reliberate you with
the power and the glory, with the power and the glory, with the power and the
glory, with the majesty, with the ministry, with the ministry of rock and roll....do
you understand what I’m talking about ?….I mean the power and the
glory, with the power and the glory, with the power and the glory, with the
majesty, with the mystery, with the ministry of rock and roll !....that’s
right… that´s right….now, unlike my competitors, I shall not,
I will not, I shall not, I can not promise you life everlasting….but I
can promise you life right now!....and all you gotta do is raise your hand and
say ´I´....”
21.04.00 Charlotte, NC, intro to ‘Stand on It’
