26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´All That Heaven Will Allow´
´´Seems like spring´s getting there now....think I´ll
take a little walk in the park, it´s nice day ....hey, hey, man, hey,
how you doing ? alright, good to see you, how´ve you been ?.... haven´t
seen you in a little while, you know....everybody´s been home, I guess....what
you bene up to ?....yeah, yeah, what ? oh-oh, here come the baby pictures (chuckles)....there´s
a little Big Man running around out there tonight....he´s three years
old, right, three, almost as big as me....there´s a lot of little babies
running around....in about 15 years there´s gonna be Street Band Volume
2....yeah....and filled with women.....we used to sit on this bench in, uh,
1975....ten years ago, you don´t look no older, though, I don´t
look no older either, right ?.... was this big office building on the corner
and we used to watch the girls come out every day at the end of work, you know....we´d
bring a few sandwiches and a couple of beers (?).... used to come out right
about this time....here they come, here they come, check the, uh, check the
one, the one in the blue skirt....wo ! (chuckles)....can´t do that no
more....I was with you, I was with you the night you met your wife....Clarence
came running into my hotelroom....says ´Bruce, Bruce, I met the girl that
I´m gonna marry´....but he used to say that about every girl that
he met, every time....you know, (?) different country (?)(chuckles)....but you
meant it that time....remember what it´s like the first time you seen
her come walking in the room and....back in New, in New Jersey, it kind of feels
like this....come on Ritchie !.... something like that (chuckles)....getting
late, I gotta be home for dinner right on time now, you know....and I gotta
be in bed by, by 11.30....that´s when she goes to bed....I´ll see
you later, alright, I´ll see you.....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Spare Parts´
´´So how you doing out there tonight ? (cheers)....that´s
good....how ´bout you guys back there ? (cheers)....that´s good....the
first thing that happens whenever I get back together with the band after we´ve
been apart for a long time....is we start telling all the old stories....about
way back when....there´s something about....there´s something about
our past together that
....that brings us closer to each other....when we haven´t seen each other
for a while....and the past is a funny thing because it can hold you down too....you
just try to, you´re afraid to give up your old dreams and....when they
don´t come true and the world just keeps breaking your heart over and
over again.....this is a song about a woman struggling with the part of her
past that wants to hold her back, keep her down...struggling to understand the
value of her own individual existence....and the value of the life of her child.....it
seems like no matter where we go or what we do, the value of our own lives always
slips in and out on us....so....I guess in this song she´s trying to understand....how
so much sadness and so much beauty....can exist in the same time....and how...and
trying to learn how to live with that....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´You Can Look´
´´Well, alright !....this is a song dedicated, uh....to window shopping....I
like to come into town and....search for a little souvenir to bring home....a
little keepsake....to sit by my bedside at night....You got that Homeshopping
Network down here ? (cheers)....I hate that damn thing....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´I´m a Coward´
´´Let me regain my composure....´cause you can look.....is
there anybody alive out there tonight ? (cheers)....does anybody feel the spirit
out there tonight ? (cheers)....that´s good because....I´ve got
a....question I wanna ask you....are there any rough, brave Kentucky men out
in the audience tonight ? (cheers)....are there any macho men out there ? (cheers)
.... because I´ve seen men that would swim rivers....they´d climb
mountains....they´d wrestle with a grizzly bear ....but there was one
thing they was afraid of ....there was one thing that scared ´em to death....and
I´m gonna tell you what that one thing was.....L....U...V...love, that´s
what I´m talking about....love scared ´em to death....now, are there
any brave Kentucky women out there ? (cheers)....are there any sweet, courageous,
lovely Southern belles out there tonight? (cheers)....because I´m talking
to you too....I´ve known women that would get in a canoe and go down the
Amazon River wrestling with crocodiles and crawling king snakes....women that
would jump out of an airplane at 30,000 feet....but there was one thing that
they was afraid of, that one thing was love....now I´m down here tonight
because I´ve got a confession I´ve got to make....I wanna say that
I have sinned !....and I don´t need no Pat Robertson to forgive me....Pat
Robertson can kiss my ass, baby....I don´t care who you bring down here,
bring Hulk Hogan down, I´ll take him on, bring George the Animal Steele
down, bring down the Road Warriors, bring down Andre the Giant....I´m
not afraid of those kinds of men....but what I wanna confess to is that....I´m
a coward when it comes to love....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Part Man Part Monkey´
´´There was this TV-movie on last week where, uh....was Kirk Douglas
and.....it´s about where they....prosecuted that guy for teaching, uh....oh,
it went like this....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Born to Run´
´´Thank you, thanks....when I was sitting home and we were talking
about going out on tour ....and uh....I was trying to think about what I....wanted
to say if I came out, what I wanted to talk to you about, sing to you about....gotta
sing a new song, that´s my job....and uh....I´d sit around and play
this song....and this is a song I´ve sung, oh, many, many, many times
over the years....and as I´ve got older and I´ve sang it, it seemed
to change....I wrote it when I was 24 years old, sitting on the end of my bed
in Long Branch, New Jersey....and I guess I thought I was writing about a guy
and a girl who wanted to run and keep on running....and as I got older and as
I sang it through the years, I guess the meaning of that song started to change
or else I just started to really hear it...and I realised that they were two
people out there searching for something better....going out into the world....looking
for a place where they could stand and I guess a place that they could call
´home´....something that´s hard to find and hard to hold on
to....and as I got older, I realised that home wasn´t out there but that
it was buried deep inside here somewhere....and that I just had to struggle
to try and get to it ...anyway, this is a song that´s kept me good company
on my search, I hope it´s kept you good company on yours....I´d
like to sing it for you and dedicate it to you tonight wishing you best of luck....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Love Me Tender´
´´Thanks, just wanna take a minute and thank everybody for coming
down to the show here in Lexington....I´ll do this for you and your baby,
wishing you safe passage....through the tunnel of love....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Rosalita´
´´And now, to sum up the questions of the evening....does the hero
get the girl ? ....does her mama come down and stop ´em ?....does her
daddy come down and wring his neck ?.... does he end up broke, busted and disgusted
?...the answer to these mysteries and others will now be revealed....”
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Tunnel of Love´
´´How about a date ? (cheers)....´´
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, intro to ´Seeds´
´´On our....last tour of the States we got down into Texas....seen
a lot of people who came down from up north....out of Pittsburg and Cleveland,
Detroit....moving south looking for work in the oil fields....when the oil prices
dropped, they got down there with no jobs, there´s no money....they had
no place to go, they´d end up sleeping in tents out on the side of the
highway....sleeping in their cars at night with no home.....this is called ´Seeds´....´´
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, end of ´Dancing in the Dark´
´´Well, have you ever been so lonely....that you just, you end up
living inside your head too much....that´s when I wanna reach out....to
somebody who reminds me I´m a member of the human race.....what I wanna
say....I just wanna say now....hey, come on, come on, baby....´´
26.03.88 Lexington, KY, middle of ´Light of Day´
