´´When I was 29, I went....I went over to my relative´s house....it
was during the Christmas season and my aunt had....she had this old picture....of,
of her and my mother and my father, right before they got married....and it
was really, it´s, it´s funny to see those pictures of your parents
when they´re, when they´re your age or when they´re real young
´cause I remember my old man was standing there, he had on this 1940´s
suit, he looked like he was gonna eat the photographer´s head off, he
had this look on his face and....and he looked, he reminded me of John Garfield
in the movies and....he looked so proud and he looked so defiant and....I always
felt sad that I never got to see him, see him like that....before, before what
he, what he had that feeling in that picture, before it turned into just, just
being bitter, just being angry ....I remember I saw that picture and it.....it
was scary.....because it just made me think that there´s....that there´s
chances out there that you can take and things can be better than they are if
you´re scared enough or if you´re brave enough....(?).....”

´´Alright, this is for Joe....and the Iron City boys, alright.....”
30.11.80 Pittsburg, PA, intro to ´I Wanna Marry You´
´´I used to live in this house....it was right on....Main street
in town and....every day I used to sit out on the porch, at five o´clock
the girls would get off from work, I´d sit there and watch ´me walking
by....oh yeah (chuckles)....but we used to sit out there, it would be me and
Clarence and Steve sometimes....(?)....so we used to sit there and this one
girl used to come by, she looked like she was older, older than us, she was
older than me and Big Man (chuckles) but Clarence had a headstart on her....we
were pretty young then.....we used to try and think of way to impress her, ways
to get her attention and stuff and I remember I went down to Western Autostore,
got this guitar for 18 bucks and I learned three chords, the chords to ´Twist
and Shout´, the greatest song ever written (chuckles) and like....then
I´d come back and I would play it, you know, when she walked on by but
she would just keep walking like she never, didn´t hear nothing, didn´t
see nothing....Clarence used to ride by on his bicycle playing saxophone, no
hands.....nothing worked.....so eventually the landlord came down and evicted
us all and we had to move away to the Shore and we never got to meet her....(chuckles)
you know, but sometimes it´s funny ´cause sometimes people, people
that you see only for a second or you see ´em just passing by in a car
or you see ´em standing on the corner and they´re like faces that
for some reason you don´t ever forget even though, as you get older, you´d
think that as the years would go by, you would, you would forget about them
but sometimes, sometimes you never do....and....Big Man....Sometimes at night
when I lie in bed.....well, I still see her face running ´round my head.....sometimes
at night when I lie in bed.....I still see her face just running ´round
my head....and here she comes walking down the street....here she comes just
walking down the street....she´s looking so fine, she´s looking
so sweet....and someday I´m gonna make her mine.....I know that I will
....someday I´m gonna make her mine.....yes, I know that I will....I know
she´s gonna stop instead of walking on by....she´s gonna stop instead
of walking on by....she´s gonna stop.... instead of walking on....little
girl....she´ll be my little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl,
little girl,little girl....little girl,little girl,little girl,little girl....little
girl,little girl,little girl,
little girl,little girl,little girl....little girl,little girl,little girl,little
girl,little girl....come back, baby....come back, darling....come back, baby....”
30.11.80 Pittsburg, PA, intro to ´Growin´Up´
´´Alright, this is....this is for everybody that came to see us
at the Stanley....
(....) There we were.....it was a cold November night....we were riding this
backroad in New Jersey....it was Thanksgiving, I remember....because we didn´t
have no money and we were going out this place called (?) Turkeys Farm to steal
some turkeys....so we´re driving down this dark road and.....all of a
sudden.....we get a flat....that´s tragic.....on a dark New Jersey road....the
only thing that made it worse was I had Clarence and I had Steve with me.....
´cause the first thing they do is they jump into the frontseat....just
to be close to their good old Boss....and then they´re trying to make
me go out fix the tire by myself....(?)....gonna decide this the American way,
we´re gonna gamble and see who´s gonna go out.....too many guys,
you can only choose out of two guys....just as we were sitting there argueing
about who was gonna get out and fix the flat, just like in that movie Close
Encounters of the Third Kind, we see some bright light come flashing over the
front of our car....I stick my head out the window and I look up and I see this
round cherry-red flying saucer with Cadillac fins, it says....on the outside
it says ´Melvin and the Invaders - we play weddings, parties and bar mitzvahs´....so
the guy sticks his head out, looks down and says ´Hey, any of guys know
which way it is to the New Jersey Turnpike ?´....now we just....we don´t
give out this kind of valuable information to just anybody....especially somebody
that we don´t know....so we say ´Let´s think a minute´....
say ´Ok, Mr.Spaceman, we´ll make a deal with you.....you gotta give
us each one wish.....and we´ll tell you how to get back to the Turnpike´....so
he thinks about it and he says ´Ok´....it was Clarence´s wish
first.....(?)....that wasn´t on the list, Clarence wishes for a combination,
Laundromat and pizza parlor on a corner of downtown Asbury Park, that´s
a pretty good wish....there´s gonna be a chain, you´re gonna be
seeing those everyplace pretty soon, you can wash your clothes and eat pizza
at the same time.... and then Steve.....he wants to meet Mean Joe (?)....that´s
a good wish.....(?)....so it was my turn....now, I was thinking real hard....I
said ´Well, I could wish for a spare, nah, too small-time´.....so
just as I was thinking.....I didn´t even get a chance to say it....but
I saw way over on the dark side, dark side of the road.....what I was wishing
for and thinking about starting to....starting to come into the light.....and
man, when we touched.....”
30.11.80 Pittsburg, PA, intro to ´Stolen Car´
´´It´s funny sometimes (?)....you meet somebody....you know,
you go ´I´m sure it´s gonna last forever, gonna be for always´....and
when it ain´t, it´s hard to understand howcome, howcome it ain´t
sometimes.....or if it ever will be....”
30.11.80 Pittsburg, PA, intro to ´Rosalita´
´´I´ve heard she´s in Pittsburg....wherever you are.....Rosie....come
out tonight.....
(....) To the far left of the stage....master of keys....the man whose notes.....belong
in quotes ....Professor Roy Bittan on the piano....on the guitar, we´ve
got a man.....who brought you such hits as ´I Don´t Wanna Go Home´,
´Sweeter than Honey´, ´This Time It´s For Real´,
´Some Things Just Don´t Change´, poet of the soul, master
of rock and roll, Miami Steve Van Zandt on the guitar....on the bass guitar,
Garry W. Tallent.....on the drums, the Mighty Max Weinberg.....on the organ,
now you see him, now you don´t, Phantom Dan ´Look out girls he hates
to be alone´ Federici.....and last but not least....the king of the world.....the
master of all things, big or small....faster than a speeding bullet....more
powerful than a raging locomotive ....able to leap tall women, I mean tall buildings
in a single bound ....is it a bird ?....is it a plane ?....what the hell is
it ?....the Big Man, Clarence Clemons on the saxophone....”
